キース・レヴィンとジャー・ウォブルの新プロジェクト "Metal Box In Dub"の来日! "METAL BOX IN DUB feat. Jah Wobble & Keith Levene" will come to Japan!

昨夜ユリシーズ・ボーイの河添剛さんからとってもショッキングなニュースを聞いたの！　ええ、すごく嬉しいニュース！　パブリック・イメージ・リミテッド（PIL)のオリジナル・メンバーの２人、キース・レヴィン（ギター＆キーボード）とジャー・ウォブル（ベース）が、新プロジェクト「METAL BOX IN DUB」を結成して、来年2月に日本公演をすることが正式に決まったんですって！　ワオ！　世紀の大事件じゃない？　そこにジョン・ライドンがいないのは残念だなんて言わないで！　これは見逃してはダメなのよ！　河添さんはまるで子供のように興奮していたわ。当然よね！　音楽史における最高のアルバムの一枚であるPILの『Metal Box (Second Edition)』は、あなただって大好きでしょ？

公演は2012年2月3日（金）、4日（土）、5日（日）にGarden（下北沢、東京）、7日（火）にMuse（大阪）で行なわれるの。チケットは急いで買って！　主催はヴィニール・ジャパンよ！　相変わらずグレイトな仕事をしているのね、ヴィニール・ジャパンは！　大好きよ！

でも、ひとつ心配なことがあるわ。METAL BOX IN DUBは本当に来日するのかしら。来日前にキースとジャーが喧嘩別れしなければいいんだけど。『MOJO』の昔の記事によると、ジャー・ウォブルを軽蔑しているジョン・ライドンはキース・レヴィンと再び一緒に仕事をしたがっているけど、ジョンのことを激しく嫌悪しているキースはジャー・ウォブルとのコラボを熱望し、一方気難しいキースを毛嫌いしているジャーはジョン・ライドンのことが好きらしいの。PILの人間関係って本当に難しいわ！

キース・レヴィンのことを詳しく知りたい人には、『ユリシーズ』創刊号がオススメよ！　長大なインタヴューとディスク・ガイドが掲載されているの。キースは本物の天才よ。彼のように革新的で表現力豊かなミュージシャンは、ダサい80年代ニュー・ウェイヴ・シーンにはいなかったわ。嘘じゃないわよ。

Last night Tsuyoshi Kawasoe of ULYSSES Boy let me know a very shocking news!  Yeah, that's a pleasant one!  According to his saying, Keith Levene (guitar & keyboard) and Jah Wobble (base), who are the founded members of Public Image Ltd. (PIL), have formed a new project called METAL BOX IN DUB, and they will play in Japan next February!  Wow!  It's the salient event of the century, isn't it?  Don't say John Lydon doesn't take part in the project!  Don't miss out, guys!  Tsuyoshi was extremely excited like a child, that's normal!  You also love PIL's "Metal Box (Second Edition)" deeply, one of the most important albums in the popular music history, don't you?

METAL BOX IN DUB will play on the 3rd (Fri), 4th (Sat) and 5th (Sun) of February, 2012 at Garden, Shimokitazawa, Tokyo and on the 7th (Tue) at Muse, Osaka.  Hurry up to get the ticket!  The shows are presented by Vinyl Japan.  They do a great job as before!  I love Vinyl Japan!

However, I have one anxious thing.  I wonder if METAL BOX IN DUB really come to Japan.  I have a fear that Keith and Jah will fall out to break up before the concerts in Japan.  According to the old article in MOJO, John Lydon who dislikes Jah Wobble wants to work with Keith Levene again eagerly, Keith who looks down on John seriously wants to collaborate with Jah, and Jah who hates that crab of Keith prefer working with John.  As you see, it's quite difficult for the original PIL members to communicate each other!

For those who want to know more about Keith Levene, I do recommend to read the first issue of ULYSSES.  You can read the Keith Levene long interview and his discography.  Keith is a really genius.  No innovative and expressive musicians in the new wave scene of the uncool eighties existed aside from him.  That's obviously true.

ありがとう、サイモン・フィン！ Thank You, Simon Finn!

シアトルから戻って、先日ようやくサイモン・フィンのジャパン・ライヴ『The Distance Between Stones』を買うことができたの（新宿のディスク・ユニオンで）。で、聴いてただちに思ったの。これは本当に本当に素晴しいアルバムだわ。すごく生々しいの。ソロ・アコースティック・ライヴなのに、鬼気迫る迫力なの。やたら難癖をつけたがるあの『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』でさえ彼を「今週のベスト・アクト」に選出したことがあるのも、思えば当然のことだったのね。でも、それだけではないの。劇的でもあるし静謐でもある彼の音楽は、このライヴ盤で遂に石ころのように裸形化したの。そして、裸形化したサイモンは以前にもまして漆黒の色に染まりきっているの……。 

選曲もいいわ。サイモン・フィンのアンソロジーとして楽しむこともできるゴージャスな内容なの。でも、何というアンソロジーなの！　このライヴ盤をリリースしたのは「インディ・レーベルの覇者」キャプテン・トリップ・レコーズよ。キャプテン・トリップ・レコーズのおかげで、サイモン・フィンの初来日の記憶は永遠のものになったわ。 

そして、オドロキ！　サイモンは、ライナーノーツの中で、ユリシーズの加藤彰さんと河添剛さんに加えて、私のことについても触れてくれていたの！　しかも、「ラヴリーなリー・エル」ですって！　「ラヴリー」？　ワオ！　きっと彼は、トラウマリスで私がプレゼントした折り紙のことを今でもすごく喜んでくれているのね！　サイモン、ステキな言葉をありがとう！ 

でも、私のことをラヴリーと言ってくれるサイモン・フィンもラヴリーな人だと私は思うわ！　そして『The Distance Between Stones』は、ひとりのラヴリーなイギリス人男性によ る真に恐るべき傑作。この世の真実がほしいと願う人にとって、これは畏怖すべきアルバムよ。彼は最悪の年に最高の作品を発表したんだわ。 

彼の歌は終わらない。エルサレム！　エルサレム！　エルサレム！……

Simon Finn "The Distance Between Stones - Live in Japan 2011"

Back from Seattle, I finally bought Simon Finn's "The Distance Between Stones", recorded live in Japan, at Shinjuku Disc Union the other day.  So, just after listening to that, I immediately felt it was a really, really great album.  Yeah, it's sooooo vivid.  It's just a solo acoustic live album, but ghastly.  Now I think that it was normal even faultfinder NEW YORK TIMES had selected Simon Finn as "the best live performer of the week".  But, not only that.  His fiery / tranquil music is finally denuded like a stone in the album.  Also, denuded Simon Finn is much more steeped in pitch-darkness than before...

I also love its selection of his songs.  It's so gorgeous, for you can enjoy this album as an anthology of Simon Finn.  But what an anthology!  It's released by Captain Trip Records, the champion of indie label.  I believe our memories on Simon Finn's first Japan concerts will be forever thanks to Captain Trip Records.

And, what a big surprise!  In the sleeve notes for the album, Simon kindly mentions not only Akira Kato and Tsuyoshi Kawasoe of ULYSSES but also ME!  He writes, "lovely LEE ELLE"!  "Lovely"?  Wow!  Probably he still feels happy with the origami I gave to him at Traumaris!  Thank you very much for your sweet words, Simon!

But I think Simon Finn who thinks of me as a lovely person is also a lovely person!  And "The Distance Between Stones" is a really terrible masterpiece by a lovely English man.  This is an awesome album for everyone who wants some truth in the world.  I believe Simon released the best album in the worst year.

His songs have no ends.  Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Jerusalem!...

ザ・ビートルズ！ The Beatles!

先日はシアトル旅行のことを話したわよね。シアトルは私が大好きなヴェティヴァーが所属するサブ・ポップ・レコーズの拠点よ。でも、旅行中の私はそんなことも忘れて、スモーク・サーモンを作ったり、野生のブルーベリーを摘んで朝食用のパンケーキの材料にしたり、ハイキングを楽しんだりしていたの。雪を頂く山々の美しさときたら、言葉を失うほどだったのよ。 

そして、夜は読書。窓の外に見えるきらきらした星々に時々心を奪われながら、私が読んでいたのは『ローリング・ストーン』のスペシャル・エディション『ザ・ビートルズ：全アルバム・ガイド』よ。つい最近刊行されたばかりのこのスペシャル・エディションは、ビートルズが「ラヴ・ミー・ドゥ」でレコード・デビューしてから50年の歳月が流れたことを私達に思い出させてくれるわ。これはいい本よ。『プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー』から『レット・イット・ビー』までの各アルバムについて、とても深い歴史的記述があるの。全曲解説もあるし、珍しい写真もあるし、グラハム・ナッシュやジェームス・テイラーをはじめとする様々な人達の寄稿もあるの。オススメよ！　 

みんな、知ってる？　「LOVE」という単語が最も使われているビートルズのアルバムは『ハード・デイズ・ナイト』（70回）、その次は『プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー』（65回）よ。一番使われていないのは『レット・イット・ビー』（6回）なの。興味深いでしょ？　これはこの本の「The Beatles Albums by the Numbers」というページに出ていたわ。 

ちなみに、私にとって印象深かったのは、ビートルズのプロデューサーだったジョージ・マーティンの言葉よ。「ひとたび最初の成功を収めるや、ビートルズは大衆に訴える楽曲作りの手法を自分達が持っているということに気がついたのだ」と彼は証言しているの。まあ！　天才ビートルズでも、成功するまでは自分の才能に自信がなかったのかしら？　 

多くの人達にとって、ビートルズのアルバムは60年代を定義するものよね。でもビートルズは今なお世界中で最も愛されているバンドなの。解散から40年が経過し、ジョン・レノンの死から30年が、ジョージ・ハリスンの死から10年が経った後でも。そのことを私は今あらためて実感しているところよ。今年こそ映画『レット・イット・ビー』を観ることができないかしら？　私、あの映画は一度も見たことがないの……。

I told you about my trip to Seattle the other day.  Seattle is a home ground of Sub Pop Records where my favorite band Vetiver belongs.  But I forgot that during my stay in Seattle, in making smoked salmons, gathering wild blueberries for pancakes for the breakfast, and enjoying picnic.  I almost lost my words, surrounded by the beautiful mountains covered with snow.

And, I read at night.  Sometimes attracted by the twinkle stars looking through the windows, I was involved with "THE BEATLES: The Ultimate Album-by-Album Guide" as the ROLLING STONE special edition.  This edition, published recently, reminds us that 50 years have almost passed since The Beatles released their first record "Love Me Do".  This is a good publication.  From "Please Please Me" to "Let It Be", the album-by album guide takes you deep into every Beatles disc.  Including track-by-track breakdowns of every LP, gorgeous rare-photos, and appreciations by Graham Nash, James Taylor and others.  Highly recommended!

You know?  As for the mentions of LOVE, "A Hard Day's Night" is the most (70 times).  "Please Please Me" is the second most (65 times).  "Let It Be" is the least (6 times).  Interesting, isn't it?  I found the fact on the page called 'The Beatles Albums by the Numbers' of the publication.

Incidentally, the words of producer George Martin was so impressive for myself.  He said, "Once The Beatles had their first success, they realized they had a way of writing songs that would appeal to the public".  Amazing!  I wonder if even the genius Beatles had no self-confidence before they had their success?

For many people, the Beatles albums define the Sixties.  But they remain the world's favorite band, 40 years after they broke up, 30 years after John Lennon's death, and 10 years after we lost George Harrison.  That is what I realized again after reading "THE BEATLES: ...".  Will we be able to see the "Let It Be" film finally before the end of this year?  In fact, I've never seen it before...

シド・バレット在籍時のピンク・フロイドの集大成アルバム？ Possible Syd Barrett Immersion Set?

みなさん、こんにちは！　私はしばらくシアトルを旅行していたの。楽しかったわ！　でも、飛行機の中はとても退屈。仕方がないので『Uncut』の最新号（マーク・ボランが表紙の号よ）を読んでいたんだけど、そうしたらビックリしたわ！　そこにとんでもない記事が掲載されていたの！　それはピンク・フロイドの偉大なドラマーであるニック・メイソンのインタヴュー記事のことよ。要約すると、ニックはこう言っているわ。 

ニック・メイソン「『スクリーム・ザイ・ラスト・スクリーム』、『ヴェジタブル・マン』、その他の、1967年にレコーディングされた未発表曲をリリースしたいと思っている。また、デッカで1965年にレコーディングした『ルーシー・リーヴ』、『アイム・ア・キング・ビー』、『ウォーク・ウィズ・ミー・シドニー』、『ダブル・オー＝ボー』、『ルイ、ルイ』といったリズム&ブルースの曲も。デモ・テープの存在は確認済みだよ。そのコピーを僕は持っている。そうした曲を含め、シド・バレット在籍時のアルバム『夜明けの口笛吹き』と『神秘』をセットにしてまとめてリリースしたらいいと個人的には思っているんだよ。だって、『ジャグバンド・ブルース』は、ある意味シドの訣別の辞のような曲だからね。このセットは来年夏あたりにリリースできると思うよ」 

未発表のままになっているシド・バレット在籍時代の楽曲も集めたすごいアルバムができる可能性があるということね！　ちなみに、昨年リリースされたシド・バレットの新しいベスト盤『アン・イントロダクション・トゥ・シド・バレット』には、部分的に67年の未発表のマテリアルがミックスされていたのよ。 

いずれにしても、ニックのこの発言には驚いたわ。ということは、今月に発売開始になるピンク・フロイドの新たなデジタリー・リマスター・エディション中、ファースト・アルバムとセカンド・アルバムは買わなくていいということ？　来年夏が来るのをじーっと辛抱強く待ち続ける方が賢明ということかしら？　でも、絶対待ちきれないわよね？……

Hello, guys!  I've been to Seattle for a while, that was fun!  But I was so tired in the plane that I read a new copy of UNCUT (Marc Bolan cover), and then AMAZING!  I found a feature and Nick Mason, a world famous great drummer of Pink Floyd incredible interview!  In short, Nick told the interviewer as below;

Nick Mason: I would love to do an official release of the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd album containing 'Scream Thy Last Scream', 'Vegetable Man' and other unreleased 1967 tracks.  Also, with the demo at Decca from 1965 including very R'n'B like 'Lucy Leave', 'I'm A King Bee', 'Walk With Me Sydney', 'Double O-Bo', 'Louis, Louis', and so on.  I've already known of the tape's existence and I have a copy of it.  Personally I think an immersion set that twins "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" with "A Saucerful Of Secrets" including such other Barrett-era stuffs.  'Jugband Blues' on "Saucer" is Syd's song and it's his farewell moment in a way.  I estimate that 1965-68 "Immersion" set will probably come out next summer.

There is potentially the material to make a surprising album with unreleased Barrett-era stuff!  Incidentally, a few Barrett-era Floyd tracks that never got released, which were mixed recently as part of "An Introduction To Syd Barrett" (released in 2010).

I was so surprised to read Nick's words, anyway.  So we don't have to buy the 1st and the 2nd albums of Pink Floyd from the newly digitally remastered edition to come this month?  I wonder if it's wiser that we'll look forward to the next summer patiently.  But, can't wait at all!  Don't you agree with me?...

ドリューのプレイリスト Drew's Playlist

こんにちは！　この夏私はドリューがくれた3枚のCDRを聴くことが多かったわ。ドリューというのはロスにすんでいる私の友達のことよ。彼はすごく親切で、礼儀正しい、知的な大学生なの。大の音楽好きである彼がユリシーズ・オフィシャル・ブログの読者でもあることはもちろんよ。先日彼はこんなことを言っていたわ、「ユリシーズがデヴェンドラ・バンハートと一緒にやったことをブログで読んで、僕はちょっぴり嫉妬してしまったよ。ユリシーズはなおも僕の心と魂を揺さぶっている。ユリシーズってかっこいいよ！」って。でも、ドリューだってかっこいいのよ。彼はハンサムだし、ギターも上手に弾けるし、ゴールデン・アニマルズのようなステキなバンドとも関係を持っているんだから（みんな、ゴールデン・アニマルズに注目して！　ブルージーなサイケデリック・ロックを展開するこのバンドは、まもなくセカンド・アルバムをリリースするのよ。バンドのギタリストはデヴェンドラ・バンハートの友達らしいわ。ドラムは美しいリンダがプレイするの。ゴールデン・アニマルズは2人組のバンドよ）。

で、ドリューがくれたCDRのことなんだけど、それがすごい音楽で一杯なの！　彼の魅力的なセレクションは以下の通りよ。みんなにも彼のセレクションを知ってもらいたくて、私は今日このブログを書いているわ。明らかに彼の音楽の趣味はユリシーズの趣味とおんなじよね！　良い趣味ってことよ！　あなたもそう思わない？

他の人の音楽の趣味を知るのって、私にはいつも面白いことよ。知れば友達になれるものね！　たぶん私は聞き上手よ。世界中のいろいろな人達から様々な良いことを教えてもらえたら、私はすごくハッピーよ！

Hello!  I've often listened to the 3 CD-Rs Drew gave me this summer.  Drew is my good friend living in LA, and he is a very kind, polite and intelligent university student.  Of course, he is a great music lover and one of the readers of ULYSSES Official Blog.  The other day, he said, "In reading the ULYSSES' adventure with Devendra Banhart, I must admit I am a little bit jealous.  I know ULYSSES is still vibrant in mind and soul.  ULYSSES is a cool cat!!!".  But Drew is a cool cat, too.  He is handsome, plays the guitar well, and has a connection with a cool band like Golden Animals (Guys, look at Golden Animals!  The blues-psychedelic rock band will release the second album soon.  They say the guitarist is a friend of Devendra Banhart.  The drummer is beautiful Linda.  Golden Animals is duo.)

So, the CD-Rs Drew gave me are full of great music!  His attractive selection is as above.  I 'm writing this blog today, to let you know that. Obviously, his taste on music is ULYSSES' one!  Good taste!  Don't you think so, too?

It's always interesting for me to know other people's taste on music.  I'll be your friend if I know!  Probably I'm a good hearer.  I would be very happy if I'm told various good things by the people from all over the world!
